4/7/2024 0 Comments Collins 51s-1The cult of serial number fanaticism was actually started by Rockwell itself during the time I was involved in distributor sales in the early 1980's, with the HF-380 and KWM-380, and it was infuriating. The later Collins S-Line equipment is preferred primarily because of added features and lack of things like a bird's nest of black bumblebee capacitors under the chassis, open-frame relays and that horrible poly-insulated wire which melts to glop at the sight of a soldering iron. What cost cutting influence there was, did not take place until the early 1980's and is really represented by the KWM-380, not the S-Line or KWM-2A. I can't agree that Rockwell Collins tube equipment is worse than winged emblem versions. If you check the specs, you will see that a 51S-1 is not as versatile as a 390, although they are a lot easier to service. A typical price for a 51S-1 is $ 1100-2000 depending upon condition. Not that they are better, they just aren't as common and people want them. I have to agree with Talkophone that a 51S-1 is going to cost a lot more than a 390 no matter where you find one.
